United States Fields and Reservoirs GIS Data
Digital Petrodata, in collaboration with (NRG) Nehring Associates, is developing a geographic information system (GIS) of oil and gas field and reservoir outlines for the United States. These outlines are based on field and reservoir definitions developed by Nehring Associates (NRG) for their Significant Oil and Gas Fields of the United States Database. These new GIS field and reservoir outlines will enable users to:

  • Visualize the geographic extent of fields and reservoirs.
  • Analyze spatial patterns in oil and gas discoveries, size, and production.
  • Quantify spatial variations in reservoir characteristics and performance by play and stratigraphic unit.
  • Integrate field and reservoir data with other regional geologic information in a GIS.

Oil & Gas Reservoirs Symbolized by Stratigraphic Age
and Labeled by MMS Play Codes and Field Names

The GIS products consist of two main features: oil and gas field outlines and reservoir outlines.

  • Oil and Gas Field Polygons depict the geographic extent of producing fields, based on well locations, which can be linked to information from the (NRG) Nehring Associates database.
  • Oil and Gas Reservoir Polygons represent the spatial extent of producing reservoirs within fields. Fields often contain more than one productive reservoir, which are differentiated by age and play. Reservoir outlines may also be readily tied to the (NRG) Nehring Associates database.

A cross-reference table linking field and reservoir outlines to the (NRG) Nehring and Digital Petrodata databases, as well as to State, MMS, Energy Information Agency, and IHS Energy field codes is provided with the (NRG) Nehring Associates database.

Geographic Scope
The Significant Oil and Gas Fields of the United States Database covers all producing provinces (basins) in the United States except the Appalachian Basin and the Cincinnati Arch. To facilitate data research, testing, and use, the database is divided into eight geographic regions: Gulf Coast Cenozoic, Gulf Coast Mesozoic, Gulf of Mexico, Illinois-Michigan, Midcontinent, Pacific (including Alaska), Permian, and Rocky Mountain. Digital Petrodata is developing GIS field and reservoir outlines to match these eight geographic regions.

Availability - Data will be delivered by geographic region, beginning with the Gulf of Mexico in August of 2007. Subscribers may choose to license specific geographic regions or the entire U.S. data set. Beginning in 2008, updates of the GIS products will start to be released annually in conjunction with updates to the (NRG) Nehring Associates database.

Data Delivery - Data can be provided in a number of digital formats, including ESRI shapefile, coverage, geodatabase.

Sample Data and Pricing - Please contact Digital Petrodata for sample data (shapefiles) and pricing information.
