United States Field and Pool GIS Outline Data
In an effort to provide a quick and comprehensive understanding of the U.S. oil and gas exploration and production landscape Digital Petrodata has developed “SMART” oil and gas field and pool GIS outlines. These outlines are based on field and pool definitions which are defined by State and Federal agencies. These new GIS outlines enable users to:

  • Visualize the geographic extent of fields and pools.
  • Analyze spatial patterns in oil and gas discoveries, size, and production.
  • Quantify spatial variations in pools by stratigraphic unit.
  • Integrate with other regional geologic information in a GIS.

Oil & Gas Pools Symbolized by Producing Pools
and Labeled by Field Names

The GIS products consist of three main features:

  • Oil and Gas Field Polygons depict the geographic extent of producing fields, based on well locations. GIS data includes more than 120 data attributes and has an emphasis on production data. Historical cumulative, last 5 years cumulative and 10 year annual production data for oil, gas, water, injection and days on is reported where available.
  • Oil and Gas Pool Polygons represent the spatial extent of producing pools within fields. Pool definitions are based on reported production data and a field typically contains several pools.
  • Oil and Gas Reservoir Polygons are available and approximated based on aggregated pool outlines.

Data Linking
All Digital Petrodata field and pool GIS outlines can be directly linked to State, Energy Information Association and BOEMRE data sets by using standard codes. Linkage to other commercial databases can also easily be achieved thru field name matching. Digital Petrodata can provide assistance with data linking as required by the customer.

Geographic Scope
The Digital Petrodata GIS data offering is divided into nine geographic regions which currently covers all producing provinces (basins) in the United States except the Appalachian Basin and the Cincinnati Arch. To facilitate data research, testing, and use, the GIS data is divided into nine geographic regions: Gulf Coast Cenozoic, Gulf Coast Mesozoic, Gulf of Mexico Federal Waters, Gulf of Mexico State Waters, Illinois-Michigan, Midcontinent, Pacific (including Alaska), Permian, and Rocky Mountain.

Data Availability - Subscribers may choose to license specific geographic regions or the entire U.S. data set. Updates of the GIS products will be released annually. Data for the Appalachian Basin and Cincinnati Arch are scheduled for the fall of 2011. Data can be provided in a number of digital formats, including ESRI shapefile, coverage and geodatabase.
